Double amputee Joe Townsend (pictured left and right) today received treatment at the finish line of the Men’s PT1 triathlon at the Rio Paralympics. The 28-year-old appeared to collapse after coming sixth in the gruelling event. The para-triathlon saw competitors swim 750m, use a hand bike to cover 20km and then a racing wheelchair for the final 5km. Townsend, who served with the Royal Marines in Helmand province, Afghanistan, was out on a routine foot patrol in 2008 when he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), losing both of his legs. Andy Lewis (inset) claimed Great Britain’s 13th gold medal as the triathlon made its Paralympic Games debut in Rio.
